Through A Lens Darkly behind-the-scenes photographer, Régine Romain, a photo-anthro-journalist of Haitian descent, recently presented an exhibit entitled, “Portraits for Self Determining Haiti”, at ARToMATIC 2012 – a month-long art festival that ran from May to June in Arlington, VA.
“This exhibition bridges two compelling views: Romain, the daughter of Haitian immigrants, as the composer of portraits on Haitian life rarely seen, and the reality of Haiti as a self-determining nation – a principle historically rooted in the people’s DNA as resurgent hope.”
The “Portraits for Self Determining Haiti” exhibition “showcased vibrant photographs of Haiti, three weeks after the 7.0 earthquake that killed more than half a million people. Elemental themes of faith, dignity, honor and respect are keenly displayed. The title is inspired by a series of essays published by The Nation in 1920 entitled ‘Self-Determining Haiti’ written by James Weldon Johnson, a journalist, lyricist, and renowned civil rights leader of Haitian heritage.”

Régine Romain is also a writer, performer, curator, producer, folklorist and educator who teaches photography, poetry, multi-media studies and global history, “seeking to stimulate artistic expression, critical inquiry and social activism in her students”. Romain expresses her artistic endeavors that follow her work, “Many of the photographic images that I share offer visual insight into the lives of beautiful, and often misrepresented people. My photography provides a mirror to a rich vibrant world as I look into the black space, into the black face. I share the remarkable faces and stories of the African diaspora to celebrate oneness and advance freedom for all.”
