Behind each family picture, there is a story — a story that is representative of the communities that each picture comes from.
On Sunday January 21, 2018, join NAACP Image Award-winning filmmaker and socially engaged artist Thomas Allen Harris as he moderates Telling Our Stories: Photographers of Spirit of Community, an art talk.
Spirit of Community invited 13 emerging and established artists to use their imaginations to reflect the themes, ideas, sights and sounds arising from their experiences in Harlem, a neighborhood that constantly has had to deal with change. Telling our Stories will also feature a new landmark at Harlem Hospital: a 30-foot historical timeline, documenting Harlem’s history from 1600 to the present.
Celebrating the story of Harlem, one of New York’s most iconic neighborhoods, Thomas will be moderating a discussion with featured exhibited photographers:
o Henry Adebonojo, known for his photography of musicians and a cinematographer with a long filmography, including the recent “I am Not Your Negro,” about James Baldwin.
o Tau Battice, a CUNY teacher based in Harlem, loves to harness photography for its power to preserve the moment and propel humanity to positive action.
o David Vades Joseph, a Harlem native who seeks to capture street images and wants to preserve the Harlem we recognize.
o Shawn Walker, a co-founder of the Kamoinge Workshop, has exhibited throughout the world and has taught photography for 40 years.
Much like the work of Thomas Allen Harris, a filmmaker who has dedicated his life’s work to using media to inspire social change, Telling Our Stories is an event to commemorate and advance the work of Black photographers, and an ever changing New York, through documentation of social issues, cultural change, and the history of where we have come from.
The event will be held at 3PM at the Mural Pavilion Harlem Hospital Center (512 Lenox Avenue at 136th Street, NYC) and is free to the public. This talk is a keynote part of the exhibit, which runs until February 28, 2018. Click to RSVP.
