These extraordinary pictures peel back the curtain on African-American life in Chicago in the aftermath of the civil rights struggle.

From global celebrities to little children, from churches to street corners, they show the dazzling variety of life in the fast-changing city.

All the pictures were taken by John H. White, now a photographer for the Chicago Sun-Times, who in 1973 embarked on a project for the federal government.

The programme, DOCUMERICA, was sponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency and aimed to chronicle aspects of life in the U.S. which affected the environment.
