Hank & Belle 1954 – Belle Riss Beach 1953
The times when families and friends kept physical photo albums to store their memories are slowly fading. Though there’s a convenience to instantly posting your beach day online with a Valencia filter, there’s a certain charm to holding your memories in your hands.
While cleaning out our office space to prepare for a move, we stumbled upon a large antique album that was clearly loved yet deteriorating at the seams. In this album, we found summer beach shots, family portraits, photos of legendary fashion choices and friends enjoying New York City in the 1950’s. While flipping through, you can see young couples on the beach, old friends laughing in the park, and even small family portraits. A precious album with glimpses of New York through the lens of black photographers is a wonderful time capsule to own, however Digital Diaspora Family Reunion wants to reunite these precious memories with their original owner.

I think this is a wonderful opportunity for people of color to show photos and to share narratives of their family and past lifestyle. I am from the Long Island New York area and are amongst the earliest settlers of the area from the early 1700’s. I have so many vintage photos of my family from the Civil War to the Cotton Club era.
