LESSON PREPARATION

PROGRAM PROCESS
  • Students meet with instructor to obtain background information on project's mission, goals, etc. Instructors should obtain additional materials related to African American photography /history/black culture/regional history and culture, etc. Instructors should also have basic photography and archival preservation information that will familiarize and make the photo preservation process more accessible to students.(ex: how to properly handle photos, where they should be stored, how to notate pertinent information about the photo, photo types, {Polaroids/35mm, instant camera and traditional photos}) will be addressed. Demonstrations or site visits to local museums, libraries and the like are recommended as students will get hands on experience with process.
  • Instruction on developing production schedule (research, filming, photo acquisitions, etc.), mapping out project's timing, content for acquiring oral histories (questions to ask family members to obtain information related to theme and to get family members involved, etc.) including actual production/editing/finalizing etc.
  • Students select a project theme based on activity sheets. They can then determine how to create the project --as a group or individually depending on time and resources.
  • Students begin searching for and finding family photos. In the process, they can engage with family members on the photos, explaining their project to the family and getting the family's input and participation. Students should also document conversations, photos, and such with camera phones, cameras, video and other multimedia equipment or applications and be encouraged to be as creative as their imaginations will allow.
  • Projects should be edited with the instructor's guidance for final production.
  • Students present their projects to their peers at the end of the program.
POST PROGRAM EVALUATIONS
  • On the program's completion, instructors should obtain evaluations from student participants, their parents and/or family members and from themselves.
