ACTIVITY SHEET #1

"Family Style"

Photography has always captured the diversity of styles and beauty found in Black communities throughout history. As times changes so do styles..or do they? Find your family photos and see.

1. Find your family photos. Look through them and remember to use the photo preservation tools and processes you've discussed in meetings w/advisor.

2. Talk with family members about what you see in the photos. Sample questions to use:
  • When were the photos taken, who took them and who's in them?
  • What was happening during that year/time when photo was taken (what was the popular music, movie that was out, political activities, etc.)?
  • Did you buy your own clothes, how did you get your hair done, what did (mother/father/siblings) teach you about dressing,
  • Are there any special stories or reasons about what you wore, why did all of you dress alike? (sorority/fraternity, high school clubs, church, etc.)
Plan to discuss this and encourage them to tell you stories related to the project. They may actually still have some of their favorites photos in other places too. Ask them to pull the photos out or show you where they are!

3. Select one or two photos to bring to the next session. You will discuss these photos and your process of finding the photos, talking with your family members, etc. during the next session.

4. Come to the next session prepared to take photos of yourself and be sure to dress so your own style is reflected.
