Session 1

  • Introduce activity (show TALD trailer, etc.)
  • Warm Up Exercise: (looking at images in Black Photography books and Xerox copies of photos)
  • Warm Up Exercise: "Bag of Words" Poetry Exercise to get students to begin writing for written component of their final projects and journals.
  • Introduction to Photography (portraiture style, basics of shooting, "what is visual storytelling?", etc.).
  • Allow students to photograph each other (students group into pairs)
  • Wrap Up:
    • Will receive first "homework" assignment, which will be the "Family Style" activity sheet. Students are told to come dressed in their preferred "style".
    • Give students envelopes to put selected photo in for return to session.
    • Give students reminder flyer for them to ask family member to be interviewed with family photos.
