"Meet Your Heroes"

Mom? Dad? Sister? Brother? Uncle? Let your search through your family photos find a family hero hidden in the pages of your photo album.

1. Find your family photos. Look through them and remember to use the photo preservation processes discussed in meetings with instructor and from any library or photo archive visits.

2. Ask family members to identify who's in the photos. While you're discussing, use some of these sample questions.
  • When were photos taken, Who took them? Who's in the photos?
  • What kind of work did he/she do? What was happening in community at the time?
  • What was unique about the person? Did they challenge the standards of the times by (think about qualities like creativity, acting, activism, etc.)?
  • Why do you consider them a hero?
3. Take good notes of the answers your family members give you. Select one or two photos to bring to the next session. You will discuss these photos and the answers to your questions during the next session.

4. Come to the next session prepared to take photos of yourself with photos you bring to session.
